Food and drink in Suriname: cuisine and Paramaribo restaurants
The Surinamese kitchen: roti, moksi meti, pom and where to eat best in Paramaribo. Practical tips for your trip.
The Surinamese kitchen is one of the most diverse in the world — a fusion of Javanese, Indian, Creole, Chinese, Maroon and Dutch influences. Here's what to try during your Paramaribo trip.
Roti
Thin flatbread with chicken-longbean-potato curry. The classic — try Roti House or Roopram.
Moksi Meti and pom
Moksi meti = mixed meats with rice, the definitive Creole plate. Pom is a baked casserole of pomtajer root, chicken and citrus, served at celebrations.
Javanese: bami, nasi, saoto
The Javanese warungs in Blauwgrond are a must. Try saoto soup, bakabana (fried banana) and lontong.
Chinese and Maroon
Chinese eateries are everywhere and affordable. Maroon cuisine (cassava, smoked fish) is found at specialty places.
Drinks
Parbo Beer, dawet (coconut), passion-fruit juice and Borgoe rum. Tap water is drinkable in Paramaribo but many visitors prefer bottled.
