Safety in Suriname: practical tips for travelers
Is Suriname safe for tourists? Practical safety tips for Paramaribo, money, traffic and inland travel.
Suriname is generally a safe country for tourists, especially compared to many other places in the region. With common sense you'll enjoy Paramaribo worry-free.
Paramaribo: day-to-day safety
Walking the center by day is fine. After dark, take a taxi or Bolt — avoid dark side streets and the Palm Garden at night. Don't wear flashy jewelry and keep your phone out of sight in busy areas.
Money
Carry limited cash. Withdraw from ATMs inside supermarkets or banks (not on the street). Many restaurants take card; euros are welcome at larger businesses and exchange offices.
Traffic
Left-hand traffic, many scooters without lights, unexpected potholes — drive defensively. Cycling only in quieter neighborhoods.
Interior
For Brownsberg or Galibi trips, book with a reputable operator. Bring mosquito spray, water and sun protection.
