Public transport in Suriname: buses, taxis and tips
How to get around Paramaribo and Suriname without a car. Buses, taxis, shared taxis and typical costs explained.
Public transport in Suriname is limited compared to Europe, but you can still get around Paramaribo without your own car.
Buses
Paramaribo has private buses on fixed routes, fares from SRD 5–15 per ride. They run mostly during daytime and get crowded at rush hour.
Taxis and shared taxis
Regular taxis are affordable (€3–€8 within Paramaribo). Always agree on the price up front — meters aren't used. For long distances (Nickerie, Albina) shared taxis leave when full.
Bolt
Bolt operates reliably in Paramaribo — great for evenings or with luggage.
Rental car?
For trips outside Paramaribo (Commewijne, Brownsberg) a rental car is much more practical than public transport. Many guests combine a few rental-car days with Bolt for the rest.
